Updated: 30 feared dead as bus plunges into river in Ogun

The Road Safety officials say they are hampered by lack of equipment and cannot Ascertain casualty figure. About 30 passengers of a commercial bus were on Friday feared dead, by drowning, when their vehicle swerved off a dual carriage bridge and plunged into a river at J4, Ogbere-Ijebu stretch of the Sagamu – Ore expressway. Many of the victims are believed to have been swept by the river tide after the vehicle plunged into the river. Three people are said to have survived the accident, including a pregnant woman who was reportedly hung on a tree branch in the river. The Unit Commander, Ijebu – Ode Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Seidu Osilama, said his officials arrived at the scene of the accident few minutes after it occurred. He said they were able to rescue the three survivors because they fell off the bus and landed on tree. The Road Safety boss added further that rescue efforts would require crane and divers to ascertain the location of the bus and the passengers inside the water. Mr. Osilama, who addressed journalists in Ogun, said he could not ascertain the exact number of passengers in the bus, or the casualty figure, as the victims are still in the water. The bus is believed to be a 33-passenger capacity bus.
