FLOOD: NGO Rescues 12,300 Trapped Flood Victims In Delta State

A non-governmental organisation, DICKENS Sanomi foundation, Friday, rescued 12,300 persons trapped in the ravaging flood in six local government areas in Delta State under its Project ‘Rescue 10,000 Flood victims in Delta and Bayelsa States’. The displaced persons were rescued in 500 seater engine and speed boats from communities in Ughelli North, Ughelli South, Patani, Isoko North, Isoko South and Burutu Local Government Areas of Delta State and were subsequently taken to some government designated camps. He disclosed that a whooping sum of N100million had been earmarked by the foundation as part of its contribution towards alleviating the sufferings of victims of the ravaging flood, whom, he said were being subjected to serious psychological trauma. He said of the N100m, N50m each would be spent on the displaced persons in Delta and Bayelsa States, assuring that the donations would be organized in two phases. He added that the situations in the camps would on a daily basis be monitored so as to replenish the food items as they were running out. On their part, Secretary and Treasurer of the Project Rescue 10,000 Flood victims in Delta and Bayelsa States, Mr. Great Sanomi and Mr. Michael Onyenadjo, respectively, further disclosed that cash donations would also be made to the camps to cater for some of the basic needs of the flood victims. While disclosing that the source of funding for the project was from amongst family members of the late Dickens Sanomi in whose honor, they said, the foundation was founded, they stated that no fewer than 218 students are currently under the scholarship scheme of the foundation. Meanwhile, snakes have invaded Yayoregbene and Ekorogbene communities in Ngbelebiri kingdom, Burutu Local Government Area of Delta State. The snakes, which were running away from the ravaging flood found the swamped homes of the villagers to be more habitable and occupied them. As at yesterday, the villagers had killed over 10 snakes and reports from the area said the people were no longer contending with flood alone, but snakes and acute hunger. Meantime, a 45-year-old woman, Mrs. Shaka Felix, who allegedly lost N2 million to the ravaging flood in the community attempted to commit suicide, during the week, but was rescued.
