Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo state on Wednesday approved the removal of the Permanent Secretary in the state’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism, Mrs Caro Edo-Osagie, from office with immediate effect for dereliction of duty.
Edo-Osagie’s removal is contained in a statement signed by the state’s Commissioner for Information, Mr Louis Odion, and made available to newsmen in Benin.
The statement directed the sacked permanent secretary to hand over all government’s property in her care to her immediate subordinate within 24 hours.
No reason was given for her removal.
But sources at the ministry said that Edo-Osagie’s sack might not be unconnected with the death of a popular Benin-based artist, Brown Atiemwen.
The Permanent Secretary was alleged to have delayed the release of N150,000.00 donated by the state government for the treatment Atiemwen, a staff of her Ministry and a Nollywood actor, who had been diagnosed with intestinal problems by medical doctors. Atoemwen needed the money for surgery. He died on Sunday.
Members of the Artist Guild in Edo had on Monday staged a peaceful protest.
The governor also announced the removal of 41 Zonal Inspectors and Chief Inspectors of Education and Local Government Education officers over non-performance and negligence of duty as part of sanitation of the State Education system.
Besides, the governor announced the demotion of the Vice Principal of New Era College, Mr. S.E. Akhabue, from Grade Level 15 to Grade Level 14 for being a “perpetual late comer.”
A press statement signed by Peter Okhiria, Chief Press Secretary to governor Oshiomhole, said the governor’s decision was the outcome of a continuing performance audit in the state.
The statement added that administrative details of the change in the school inspectorate will be made known in the coming days.
